I was going merrily through my day yesterday, ferrying kids between piano lessons and summer camps, making plans to meet a friend after dinner, when a new post from the blog Finslippy popped up in my feed reader. The title, About What I’ve Been Eating, caught my eye right away both because I love to read about anything food-related and because I’ve read enough Alice Bradley to know that she tells it like it is with a good dose of self-deprecating humor. I read it immediately, then read it again.
So, quick: you go read it, too. Then come back and we’ll talk some more. No, really. Go read it.
Back? OK, good. Now here’s what I was thinking after I read that post. I was thinking about how every single adult makes food choices based on a combination of information, culture, upbringing, taste, priorities, and health factors, and that no two people – not even two people who make almost the exact same food choices – have come to those decisions the exact same way.
If you haven’t already, take a moment today to check out the “About Us” section down at the bottom of Just Vittles, and you’ll see, in a nutshell, a few of the reasons that we’re bringing this site to you. Some of us had health issues that caused us to research the role food plays in how we feel; some of us did that research for our children. Some of us are just starting on the path of figuring out what it means to eat clean food; some of us have been working on that for roughly five or ten years now. Some of us have consulted with allergists and naturopaths in our efforts to learn more; some of us have largely relied on the wisdom found in books and friends and Internets.
I think it’s safe to say that everyone reading (and writing) here at Just Vittles comes because we want more information, support, and resources as we move forward in our clean-eating journey. But I bet that every single one of us came here for a different set of reasons, and just like Alice’s story is unique and interesting in its way, I am hoping to hear why you’re here, too. Did you come across a book, article, website, or blog post that set you on this path? Did you discover a food allergy and come to learn how to cook in a new way? Did you have a health scare, or set a weight-loss goal, or get a doctor’s advice that changed your habits? Were you raised in a family or culture that emphasizes clean eating, or are you just figuring it out for yourself? Are you doing this for you, for your family, or for both? Did you have a “WHAT THE NO THAT CANNOT BE PLEASE GOD HELP” moment, or was it a long, slow shift?
What I’m saying is, we’re so glad you’re here, and we’d love to know why you came.
